How to Become a Notary Public in California

California Notary Requirements:

  • Minimum Age: 18 years old
  • Residency: Resident or Employee of business in CA residing in bordering state

  • Bond Required: $15,000 for the 4-year commission term

  • Application Fee: $40 (test & application)

  • Mandatory CA Notary Education Class & Exam – please refer to CA SOS website. Must not have any felony convictions or disqualifying misdemeanors.

Step by Step instructions on how to become an California Notary.

1. Follow the step-by-step guideline located on the CA Secretary of State’s Website: https://www.sos.ca.gov/notary/qualifications/

2. Purchase a $15,000 Notary Bond and any supplies you will need such as a stamp/embosser, journal.

3. File Notary Public Oath & Bond.
